Back Bay profile: Boston's Back Bay consists of 580 acres. Back Bay at one time was all water. In 1820 the state threaten to take the Back Bay from the city of Boston under public health laws. As a result, Boston  agreed on a plan to create 580 acres of land fill that created what is know known as Boston Back Bay. In order to complete this project two out of the three mountains in Beacon Hill (once known as Trimountain) were takem down and the land fill was used to created the Back Bay of Boston. It took over 50 years to complete. One could say this was the first "Big Dig of Boston's fine history.
